Jim was leading a bespoke winter skills day at the end of November in the Cairngorms. A young fit group enjoyed the day, learning loads. Here's Jim's take on the day....
I met Charles, Calum, Alex and Andrea in Cafe Active in Aviemore to talk about the kit and planning required for a Scottish winter hill day. Then, after checking that all our crampons were correctly fitted, we headed off to the Cairngorms in search of some decent snow to train on. Above the ski runs on the side of Corrie Cas, we found a nicely angled snow field with a safe run out.
With much hilarity we practiced ice axe breaking feet first, head first, posing for cheesy photos with ice axes at the ready between sliding down the hill! Also we covered walking in crampons (don’t practice ice axe arrest wearing crampons to avoid injury), and studied the different types of snow, avalanche avoidance. A great day out !
Our next Winter Skills in the Cairngorms is on 18 January, more details here .
